I’d like to introduce myself to you. My name’s Ryan Macfarlane. I just graduated this spring from the University of Lethbridge, in small town Lethbridge, Alberta, where I was Editor-in-Chief of the Meliorist. At NASH77 I was voted to take over from Jane as CUP’s National Executive. I’ve only just started this week, but already I’m feeling equal parts anxiety and excitement.
If you’re new to your paper, you may be wondering what CUP is and why you’re reading this. Well, CUP is the oldest national student press organization in the world. It was started in 1938 by 17 editors of student newspapers from across the country. You can read more about our history here.
Now, like then, CUP is about what we can accomplish together. It’s the network of student journalists helping each other do what they love and it’s strongest when we help each other. We are a co-operative and you are what makes CUP great.
I’m still transitioning into this position. I imagine you’re also in the midst of transition, either handing things off or picking them up. That makes this a perfect time for us to get to know each other a little better. I propose we have a little #CUPchat over on Slack, the communication app we use. If you haven’t yet received an invitation to join the CUP channel, send me an email at email@example.com and I’ll get you started.
During our #CUPchat, I’d like to take the opportunity to share a bit about myself, get to know each of you, and talk about what kinds of things we’d like to do this year with CUP. Most importantly, we can discuss what your dreams for your papers are this year and what CUP can do to help you achieve them.
So, please join me on Slack on Friday, May 15 at 3:00P.M. EDT for the first #CUPchat of CUP78!
